14 employees have been killed while providing services for citizens over the past 20 years. Their modest pay can make a public servant's untimely death especially difficult for their families financially. We can never bring back their loved one. But with your help, we can show those survivors how much we value their loved one’s public service, and we can make that dark time a little less stressful.

Frequently asked questions

Who do you help?
– Dependents of the employee. We base our determination of “dependents” on legal documents and the employee’s tax and life-insurance declarations.

What happens to the money if there are no employees killed at work? – It remains in the fund, earning interest, until a municipal employee is killed on the job. Unfortunately, that will happen again. When it does, we want to have sufficient funds to help that employee’s spouse and children.

Why should I contribute to HERO? City employees, like employees in other industries, take pride in their job and work hard. That’s human nature. And, through their hard work, the quality of life for you and your neighbors is greatly improved.

I already pay taxes. Why should I give more to support dependents of city employees? – Your taxes are used to provide you with services, such as smoother roads, clean water, law enforcement and emergency response. When you give to HERO, you're providing a dedicated municipal employee with a service: You’re helping take care of his or her dependents in a devastating time. Municipal employees earn modest pay. Because of that, their untimely death can be especially difficult financially for their families.
